Average Retirement
Savings Statistics

These statistics for average retirement savings show that not many Americans are adequately prepared for retirement. Are you on track to save enough money to enjoy financial freedom in retirement?

The information in the tables on this page is taken directly from the Survey of Consumer Finances from the Federal Reserve Board. The first table shows, by age groups, mean and median amounts held in retirement savings accounts for households that have retirement accounts. In other words, if a household does not own a retirement saving account, it is not factored into the figures.

The average retirement savings amount is the mean. However, this number can be greatly skewed by a few households that have very large retirement savings accounts. The median amount is probably more accurate because it is the middle value in each age group, with an equal number of accounts having higher and lower values.

The retirement accounts in this sampling include all savings held specifically for retirement in individual retirement accounts or employer sponsored plans such as 401(k) or defined-benefit plans.

However, when discussing average retirement savings statistics, it is important to note that there are other ways to save for retirement besides using tax-favored retirement plans. Many people have savings in non-retirement assets such as investment portfolios, small businesses, home equity and other real estate that they intend to use for retirement.

The following table presents a more realistic view of retirement savings because it shows the net worth (assets minus liabilities) of households by age group.
